Fairbanks, Alaska is a large city that truly delivers the Alaskan experience. Huge snow covered peaks are viewed in the distance, while the city offers shopping, dining, and many activities. Fairbanks International Airport is located about three miles from the city center on almost 3,500 acres of land. With two asphalt runways, one gravel runway, and one water landing area for seaplanes, Fairbanks International Airport is a little different from the norm. Plans are to improve the current terminal by adding one new passenger boarding bridge and updating the terminal with more modern amenities. Currently, the airport sees around 400,000 passengers every year, and estimates are that this number will increase to 550,000 within the next decade.

Fairbanks International Airport hopes to have the project completed in 2009. For now passengers may want to plan for delays in the ticketing lobby because the lines for check-in and baggage screening confuse some passengers. Also, one area of the short-term lot is under construction and closed to cars until September/October 2007. Fairbanks International Airport sees a good mix of charter, cargo, and regular air traffic. Alaska Airlines is the airport's main carrier, but other airlines do use the airport.

Directions to Fairbanks International Airport

Fairbanks International Airport is not too far from Highway 3 (Robert Mitchell Expressway). Those coming from the south will take Highway 3 towards Fairbanks. Take the Airport Way exit and follow signs to the terminal.

Drivers who are coming from the north should take Highway 2 through Fairbanks. Take the Highway 3 exit in South Fairbanks and head south on Highway 3. Take the Airport Way exit and follow signs to the terminal.

For those heading to the airport from downtown, the Johansen Expressway is a good choice. Turn onto either University Avenue or Peger Road to Airport Way. Turn right onto Airport Way and follow signs to the airport.
