Sadat was a former member of the revolutionary Free Officers and initially deemed to be too weak to effectively lead the country.

But in the eleven years he ruled until his assassination in 1981, Sadat privatized large chunks of the economy, restored the goodwill of the United States and made peace with Israel following another war in 1973.

The Camp David peace agreement with Israel eventually cost Sadat his relationship with the Arab world and his life; Egypt was expelled from the Arab League, economic ties were severed, and Egyptians became increasingly dissatisfied with his leadership.

On October 6, 1981 during official celebrations for the 1973 war, Sadat was gunned down by a group of Islamic fanatics.
