All but a smattering of overseas travelers to Alaska come through other domestic airports, requiring them to pass through Seattle or another major city. Canadians can drive to Alaska over the Alaska Highways or ride an Alaska Marine Highway System ferry from Prince Rupert, B.C.

Getting through immigration control and Customs can take 2 or 3 hours, especially if you enter the country at a big-city airport on a busy summer day. Leave at least that much time to connect to a domestic flight. Passing between Alaska and Canada is usually quick unless you have special complications.
